Standards related to Asura carbon replacement filters

The design of our filter cartridges has been subject to aeraulic studies in our laboratory which optimize the adsorption parameters contained in them.

The activated carbon used by Erlab is prepared in accordance with formulations specific to ductless fume hoods, recirculating fume cupboards and recirculating storage cabinets. Erlab imposes rigorous controls on the activated carbon batches, in accordance with tests outlined in international standards.

Carbon filters Test qualité carbone

From selecting the raw material to its confection into a cartridge, we implement a series of tests that ensure a constant level of quality and traceability in the production cycle of our filters.

The standards, which relate to carbon in its raw material, state:

Standard ASTM 2862-82

Ascertainment of the particle size distribution for activated carbon

The speed for air passing through the filter has a direct impact on the load loss of a filter cell and on the contact time between the grain of carbon and an air pollutant. In order to guarantee this essential parameter for correct filtering, we implement a continuous control of the particle size distribution in our carbons.

Standard ASTM D2854 – 83

Ascertainment of the ash content in the activated carbon

the solid residues obtained after burning activated carbon allows its purity level to be determined. Continuous checks on this criterion allow a greater level of quality to be maintained, particularly for assessing the quality of the impregnant used for its activation.

Standard ASTM D2867 – 83

Ascertainment of the Activated carbon humidity level.

The humidity level of a carbon has a double impact on the quality of this raw material:

  • It influences the net weight that a filter cartridge must contain in order to perform its filtering activities
  • The correct absorption of certain pollutants is linked closely with this criterion.

Standard ASTM D5742-95

Ascertainment of the Activated carbon butane index.

Adsorption capacity is essentially based on measuring the volume of pores of the activated carbon. This test emerges mainly as a method for ascertaining the saturation level of the activated carbon but does not necessarily provide any measurement of the efficiency of the carbon tested on other pollutants or under other operating conditions.

The standards associated with the recirculating fume cupboards that include specific performance criteria for filtering

Standard NF X 15-211: 2009

The reference standard in the area of ductless fume hoods precisely defines the filtering system capacities of a ductless fume hood or fume cupboard in keeping noxious molecules in the enclosure and characterizes the air quality downstream of the filter.

In the phase known as "normal operation", standard AFNOR NF X 15 211 requires that the maximum concentration downstream of the filtering system does not exceed 1% of the WEL of the product being handled.

Standard AFNOR NF X 15 211 treats the performance levels of a recirculating fume hood or fume cupboard in their entirety: containment, speed, and filtering system efficiency. This standard does not under any circumstances define the properties of an independent filter that is isolated from a filtering system. An independent filter may therefore not comply with standard AFNOR NF X 15 211.

As a manufacturer of devices that comply with standard AFNOR NF X 15 211, Erlab applies the same level of requirements when manufacturing the filters offered on asurafilters.com

norme

Standard BS 7989

This standard also describes the filtering system performance of a fume hood.

A special evaporation test with propanol must be carried out by submitting the filter to 800 ppm of this product (+/- 50 ppm of propanol), without interruption. The filter must maintain the following concentration downstream of the filter:

  • Less than 40 ppm for the entire period of evaporation of one liter of propanol
  • Less than 400 ppm for the period of evaporation of two liters of propanol

Standard BS 7989 deals with the performance levels of a ductless fume hood in its entirety: containment, speed and efficiency of the filtering system. This standard does not under any circumstances define the properties of an independent filter that is isolated from a filtering system. An independent filter may therefore not comply with standard BS 7989.
